Facebook hits two billion users.
When Mark Zuckerburg started Facebook in 2004 at Harvard he faced a lot of criticism. Most people complained that such a platform adds stress to their lives. Causes of stress included fear of missing important social information, fear of offending contacts, discomfort or guilt from rejection.
Despite these concerns, Facebook has grown to become on of the largest social networking companies in the world. Many people started using Facebook and discovered that there were also some positives to using the platform. Today there are a lot of stories about how Facebook has helped a lot of people around the world [you can read a few of these stories here].
“As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people!” co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post on his Facebook page marking the milestone. Facebook and WhatsApp have become the most used social media sites both having over 3 billions users.
Zuckerberg went on to say “We’re making progress connecting the world, and now let’s bring the world closer together… this an honor to be on this journey with you.”
Facebook started as social site but ever since the increase in Facebook users companies have turned to it for public relations , marketing and advertising. It provides a two communication platform which advertisers never experienced with the traditional media. The company has bridged the gap between distance and time as individuals will just connect through video calls and text. Facebook has become a source of news as traditional media has been filtered with editorial policies, government laws which promote censorship
Facebook has been at the center of many political and social uprisings over the past few years. The Arab spring is one such example. Some governments even banned the use of Facebook.
