Twitter Doubles its Tweet size
Earlier this year Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey has hinted at expanding the character limit before.
Now Twitter said that it has started testing 280-character tweets, doubling the previous character limit, in an effort to help users be more expressive. “When people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting,” Twitter said in a blog post.
The idea of extending the length of Twitter posts has been causing internally, hit around among product groups that are trying to find ways to persuade people to use the service more frequently.
“Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people Tweeting in English, but it is not for those Tweeting in Japanese,” the post reads.
Twitter removed user handles a person’s Twitter name preceded by the @ sign from replies to tweets, instead linking them in text above the tweet.
