China’s “App For Everything” exceeds 1 billion mark
China’s the biggest social networking and messenger app, and globally just falls a little behind on Facebook’s over 1.5 billion WhatsApp users. WeChat has just exceeded its 1 billion mark, according to its parent company Tencent’s CEO, Pony Ma.
The CEO, Pony referred the 1 billion to users as its total number of accounts. In a report by Statista Most famous social network sites worldwide as of January 2018, WeChat was ranked 5th with 980 million active users, The Social App become popular in China because of its additional features like games embedded in the app. Users can also contact the business in the app e,g to order food, set up a dentist appointment or book a cab. Additionally, it has digital payment systems integrated to easily make payments for services.
The other reason why WeChat is the most popular Social Media in China is that other apps like Google, Facebook and Twitter are illegal. In a report, half of WeChat users spend more than 90 minutes a day on the app.
But there are privacy concerns, the CEO of the app being a parliamentarian, that the Chinese authorities actively censor social media content that they dislike.
