The mobile penetration rate in Zimbabwe is growing steadily over the last 10 years with a lot of people now having access to mobile phones especially, Android smartphones.
According to Telecoms Regulator, Potraz, active mobile penetration rate as at 31 December 2017 was 102.7% which represented a 7.9% growth from 94.8% recorded in 2016. The 7.9% growth of active mobile subscribers also contributed to the growth of Internet usage in Zimbabwe of 15.4 billion Megabytes last year.
A lot of people are now carrying smartphones in their pockets but some, in fact, a majority only use these smartphones for social media i.e. WhatsApp and Facebook. On average every 10mins a smartphone user checks their phone twice for mostly Instant Messenger messages.
What is a smartphone? A smartphone is a handheld personal computer with a mobile operating system and an integrated mobile broadband cellular network connection for voice, SMS, and Internet data communication; most if not all smartphones also support Wi-Fi.
These devices are able to run a variety of software components, known as “apps”. Most basic apps (e.g. event calendar, camera, web browser) come pre-installed with the system, while others are available for download from official sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Android and iOS have pre-installed apps on them, StatCounter reported that Android is the most used Operating system as at February 2018 Zimbabwe’s Mobile Operating System Market Share with 76.92%.
Android has mostly preferred OS in Zimbabwe because of it being an open system meaning one can install most apps on their smartphone for free and from any source.
