THE POSTAL AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS REGULATORY AUTHORITY OF Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) indicated at 31 March 2020 Telecel is the only mobile operator which recorded a decline in active mobile telephone subscriptions in the quarter under review.
According to the POTRAZ sector performance quarterly report, the number of mobiles registered Telecel subscribers from the 4th quarter of 2019 to the 1st Quarter of 2020 decreased by a variant of a negative -9.4 percent.
By 4th quarter 2019, Telecel had up to 910,677 active subscribers whereas by 2020 March the numbers had decreased to 825,478.
However, Econet recorded a positive 5 highest percent increase from 9,117,826 in December 2019 to 9,575,796 in March 2020.
With a positive variance of 4.9 percent in the number of active subscribers Netone also had 3,323,248 active subscribers in the 1st quarter of 2020 compared to the 4th quarter 2019 record of 3,167,399.
Therefore according to POTRAZ the decrease in Telecel`s active subscriptions is attributable to limited base station availability due to power supply challenges, hence subscriber attrition to competitor networks.
