Hackers targeting prominent figures on twitter

Hackers are being reported they are bagging into people’s Twitter accounts, requesting for the donation of cryptocurrency, for the gain of double Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a type of digital currency in which encryption techniques are applied to regulate the generation of units of currency. Cameron Winklevoss, who was declared the world’s first Bitcoin billionaire in 2017. Hackers also stealing from people and promising them to become Billionaires too.

The scam is not only on Twitter but also on Instagram and Facebook, the hackers also opened accounts, on Twitter, they posted that, It was a charity attack. Your money will find its way to the right place. These “double your Bitcoin” scams have been a persistent pest on Twitter for years but this is unprecedented with the actual accounts of public figures hijacked and on a large scale. Billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates are among many prominent US figures targeted by hackers on Twitter in an apparent Bitcoin scam.

These hackers attacked, official accounts of Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Kanye West also requested donations in the cryptocurrency. Mr Gates also reported that he is being shocked by people asking him to give back their money which he wasn’t aware of, this was set by hackers which posted on Twitter that “ You send $1, 000, I send you back $2,000.”Dmitri Alperovitch, who co-founded cyber-security company CrowdStrike, told Reuters news agency that this appears to be the worst hack of a major social media platform yet

Dr Drew recently co-authored a paper warning about the potential of Twitter being used to sow disinformation. Added that the latest incident highlighted the need for all major social media platforms to check their security measures, particularly in the run-up to the US Presidential vote. Also told BBC that Social media companies such as Twitter and, Facebook all must consider the damage and influence their platforms can have on the 2020 election, and she some companies are taking that more seriously than others.

On the official account of Mr Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX chief appeared to offer to double any Bitcoin payment sent to the address of his digital wallet. Concerning this incident, on Wednesday 15 July 2020, The FBI’s San Francisco field office put out a statement about the latest cyber-breach, the accounts appear to have been compromised to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud. Advised the public not to fall victim of this scam by sending cryptocurrency or money.

In response to this scam, Twitter earlier had to take the extraordinary step of stopping many verified accounts marked with blue ticks from tweeting altogether. Password reset requests were also being denied and some other “account functions” disabled. It added that “significant steps” were taken to limit access to such internal systems and tools while the company’s investigation was ongoing.

Social media platforms are meant to give adequacy socialization through entertainment, information as well as education, therefore, users should be careful about how they use these platforms and also avoid hackers.
