South Africans are to get an Electronic Vaccination Data system (EVDs) to assist with the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines across South Africa. Hence, the South African government is in the process of developing it.

The EVDs are designed to assist in the management of the COVID- 19 vaccines, including surveillance of the vaccine. This system is expected to render and track vaccine information, such as patient information, including demographics and number of dose, as well as safety information, such as possible inauspicious events following immunisation and details of vaccine administration sites.

Part of the cautionary system will include reminders for follow-up appointments to receive a second dose. It will include an integrated track- to -track system for defaulters, in other words, those who do not shop up to receive their second shot. Further, a dashboard system is also being developed to capture the reasons given for vaccine refusal.

South Africa’s Department of Health declares that all South Africans who are vaccinated will be placed on a national register and provided with a vaccination card. South Africa’s Commission revealed that a common approach for mutual recognition of vaccination documentation is of the “utmost importance”, adding that it wants, “an appropriate trust framework” to be agreed upon by the end of January.

Netizens have already started to react towards this upcoming development of “covid- 19 vaccine ID”, “I’m assuming that a covid vaccine ID is being created in South Africa because not all South Africans have medical aid. An ID would be the easiest way to record your vaccination just like your medical aid records your medical history,” said one on Twitter.

Tech companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, and Salesforce announced their cross-industry effort to establish a universal standard for vaccination status,  “as the world begins to recover from the pandemic, having electronic access to vaccination, testing, and other medical records will be vital to resuming travel and more,” said Mike Sicilia, executive vice President of oracle’s  Global Business Units.
