Due to the recent worldwide backlash of WhatsApp over their new privacy policies. Telegram has gained ground with an upsurge in users recording over 70 000 new subscribers since the announcement by WhatsApp. It seems they are going all-in to seize the opportunity to overtake WhatsApp in the instant messaging business.
In this latest update (version 7.4), Telegram added a new feature that allows you to import your chat history from WhatsApp and other apps.
The migration feature is available on both Android and iOS devices. Migrated chats will be received as a ZIP file in Telegram.
To migrate your WhatsApp chats to telegram on an IOS device, open the contact information or group information page, tap export chat then select Telegram in the share menu.
On an Android device, open chat you want to export, select options on the top right corner, select more, tap export chat before you select telegram in the share menu.
From the telegram side, upon receiving the ZIP file you will be instructed to select the contact you want to add the chat too, the massages will sync for both you and your contact.
Adding the migration feature was such a considerate thing for Telegram to do. Giving it’s users a passage to gradually move from WhatsApp easily and conveniently.
Telegram also added other new features to the update. The most notable being the new privacy feature. It lets you delete group massages, individual massages and call history for both parties at once. This means with Telegram, you are now able to delete messages and call history for yourself and the one who received it including groups
