- Telone and Eutelsat Sign agreement
- Broadband Coming to remote areas in Zimbabwe
- Satellite broadband accessible from anywhere
Eutelsat Communications and Telone (PVT) Limited have signed an agreement that will see high-quality satellite-based broadband extending to marginal and rural areas across Zimbabwe.
The terms of the multi-year agreement with Eutelsat state that Telone (Pvt) Limited will start operating using the flexibility and power of the Eutelsat Konnect satellite starting March 2021 which will see high-quality broadband coming to all Telone subscribers. The agreement will extend broadband coverage to the remote areas to bridge the digital divide in the country using a satellite-based network that can be accessed by anyone from anywhere.
Telone is Zimbabwe’s second-best internet access providers with a total of 55.000 subscribers behind Liquid telecoms which have 260.000 subscriptions based on the abridged postal and telecommunications sector performance report (third-quarter2020). In 2021 we might see Telone gaining market share because of the remote areas which were inaccessible before and also because of the new reliable and cheap satellite broadband service.
With “an ambition to boost social and economic development providing reliable, accessible and cheap connectivity anywhere”. “Konnect” is Eutelsats satellite broadband initiative operating in Africa Europe and Russia.
Its state of the art satellite broadband infrastructure enables Telecom operators and internet service providers to offer reliable and cheap internet access whether in urban or the remotest locations.
Although satellite-based broadband(ranging from 2mbps to 30mbps) is slower than fibre (ranging from 35mbps to 60mbps), it is an achievement in the countries effort to increase internet penetration into the marginal areas and also keep in mind that placing fibre cables in rural areas will be more costly.
Founded in 1977, Eutelsat communications is one of the worlds leading satellite operators with a global fleet of satellites and associated infrastructure. It is headquartered in Paris, France but has offices around the globe.
