- Internet use increases,
- Netone and Telecel Lose market share.

Zimbabwe is slowly catching up to the digital age as the country recorded a 13.1% increase in data terabytes consumed in the 4th quarter of 2020 up from 14.878 terabytes consumed in the previous quarter. A total of 6.661 terabytes was consumed in the first quarter, which is 10.173 terabytes less than that recorded during the end of the year.
The consistent increase in data usage was as a result of the Covid 19 induced lockdown put first in place on 24 February 2020. Since then people had to resort to internet use for the survival of various parts of the economy. The internet has been instrumental in the continuation of schools, government, retail, Church, Music and most importantly our social life.
The surging use of WhatsApp voice and video calls by the business society and individuals towards the festive season may have contributed immensely to the increased internet use as people could not meet and enjoy festive holidays like they used to. The internet was used as an alternative to in-person socializing with friends and family.
Econet Wireless gained the most from the increased internet use in Zimbabwe as they recorded an 8.7% increase of the market share from 69,7% in the previous quarter and 67.0% market share in the first quarter. Netone and Telecel lost market share by 8.1% and 0.6% from 29.1% and 1.2% respectively in line with the decline in consumption as the demand for a cheap, reliable and fast internet connection continue to increase.
