- Instagram releases a lighter version
- What’s not on Instagram light?
- Enjoy Instagram from anywhere in the world
The new data and storage sensitive, lighter version of the Instagram application is only 2mbs in size (from 30Mbs) and even works on 2G connections.
Instagram lite version offers the majority of features that you get from the bigger version such as editing, sharing, and viewing photos and videos, as well as the ability to add stickers, create and view Stories, the Explore discovery, and recommendation algorithms (recommends an item to a user if similar users liked this item before).
Because Instagram lite consumes less data, it loads images and videos faster than the bigger version giving you a more simplified experience.
What was left out on Instagram light?
The Facebook-owned platform left out some key features such as reels, the ability to make Tik-Tok like short videos (although you can still view them), and dark mode.
Facebook might be targeting those who had stopped or otherwise never used the app because of its high data consumption or need for a stronger internet connection(3G and above) with this data-conscious version and will realize an increase in users. In the remote areas of Zimbabwe, for example, 3G and LTE services are hard to come by however you can now enjoy Instagram using 2G.
The less data- and storage-intensive version of popular photo and video app will only be available for android users but hopefully, an iOS release is not far behind.
